Gesture Mapping
A Gesture
is a mapping of a
Chord
with a Slide or
Tap to perform an action (such as a thumb+finger tap set
to a "Copy" action). In this section we will learn
how to edit/add gestures on our FingerWorks device.
Below is the default gesture mapping for the 2 Fingertip
chord. Notice there are two gestures associated
with this chord: a sliding "Point Event" (mouse
movement) and a tapping "Primary Click Event" (left
mouse click).
The
Gesture Addition/Removal
section
is used to add or
remove slides and taps to the current chord selected.
For this example, lets remove the current assigned
slides and taps and re-add them manually to this chord
(keeping their functions the same). Clicking the
"Defaults" button will always reset the chord with its
default gesture mapping.
To remove a slide or tap
you can either:
1. Right mouse click on the slide/tap on the left and
select "delete"
2. Drag the slide/tap button on the right to the trash
icon in the bottom right.
Here is a picture of the
chord without any gestures mapped to it.
Notice there are now a
bunch of new icons in the Gesture Addition/Removal
section. These buttons represent different types
of slides or taps and clicking them adds them to the
chord. Below is a chart explaining some of the different
types of slides and taps available.
|
This is a tap involving one
or more fingers. |
|
These are movements that
require holding down a button at the beginning and
releasing the button at the end. An example of
this is the "Drag" gesture. |
|
These represent mouse wheel
movements such as scrolling (up and down) and even
panning (left to right).
|
|
These are slides
representing single or multiple directions. |
|
These represent contraction
and expansion of a thumb and a combination of fingers.
The single direction versions are often called pinches
and flicks. |
|
These are rotations of a
thumb and a combination of fingers. |
We will add a "tap"
and an "all direction slide" .
Our window should now look like this:
Now we will add left mouse
click and mouse pointing actions back to these gestures.
First we will add the mouse pointing. Click on the
box that says
"Empty", the screen will switch to this:

Click "change" button and
the Key/Mouse/Macro Event editor should pop up. We
will assign the "Point Event" macro to this action as
shown below. Hit "ok" to close the window.
Some gestures like mouse
pointing have sensitivity settings that must be set
correctly. This can be done by selecting the
"Slide Motion" tab as seen below:

The default speed for mouse
pointing is 130. Some slides have "Special Properties"
that can be set at this window as well. The most
common property set is "One Shot" which when
selected will limit the action of the gesture to once
per slide. "Fast Shot" on the other hand
will repeat the action unless the slide is performed
quickly.Now that
we have finished with mouse pointing, we can repeat set
a left mouse click in a similar way. First click
on the "Empty" tap found under the "Point and Click"
hand in the left side of the picture above. The
properties box will be shown just like
before and again we will
click the "change" button to bring up the
Key/Mouse/Macro Event editor.
This time we will select
the Event Macro "Primary Click Event". Once that
is set we can hit :"ok". Clicking the "Point and
Click" hand on the left should now show the same gesture
mappings we started out with.
Now we are ready to
transfer our settings to our FingerWorks device.
